Pahalgam
The Valley of Shepherds
About Pahalgam
Pahalgam β the Valley of Shepherds β sits at 2,740 metres where the Lidder and Sheshnag rivers meet, creating one of Kashmir's most serene and picturesque towns. Once a simple shepherd's village, Pahalgam has grown into a beloved hill station without losing the natural beauty and tranquillity that make it special.
The area is a gateway to some of Kashmir's most beautiful valleys. Betaab Valley, named after the Bollywood classic filmed here, is a riot of colour β deep green forests, snow-capped peaks, and a sparkling glacial stream. Baisaran, accessible only on foot or horseback, earns its nickname 'Mini Switzerland' with its pine forests and open meadows dusted in snow well into late spring.
Pahalgam also holds deep religious significance β it is the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, one of Hinduism's most sacred journeys. But for most visitors, Pahalgam is simply a place to unwind: fishing in the Lidder for brown trout, riding horses through meadows, or sitting by the river listening to the water. It is the Kashmir of the imagination β timeless, peaceful, and endlessly beautiful.
