About Pangong Lake
Pangong Tso is, without question, one of the most visually stunning bodies of water on earth. At 4,350 metres above sea level, this vast saltwater lake stretches 134 kilometres from Ladakh into Tibet, and on a calm day its surface shimmers through seventeen distinct shades of blue and turquoise — an almost unreal colour that shifts with the light and the seasons.
The drive to Pangong from Leh is itself an adventure — crossing Chang La, the world's third-highest motorable pass at 5,360 metres, before descending through the remote Changthang plateau to the lake's edge. The moment the lake appears in the valley below, every minute of the five-hour journey feels worthwhile.
Overnight camping at Pangong is a deeply memorable experience. As darkness falls across the high plateau, the lake reflects a sky so thick with stars that the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. In the morning, bar-headed geese wade in the shallows while the rising sun turns the mountains pink and gold. It is one of those rare places that feels genuinely untouched and utterly unforgettable.
