Kashmir's climate changes dramatically across the year, so what you pack depends heavily on when you're travelling. Here's a season-by-season checklist to help you pack light without leaving anything essential behind.
Packing for Spring (March to May)
Days are mild but mornings and evenings stay cool. Pack light woollens or a fleece jacket, a light raincoat (spring showers are common), comfortable walking shoes, and layers you can add or remove through the day.
Packing for Summer (June to August)
Daytime temperatures are pleasant, but evenings can turn cool, especially in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg. Pack light cotton clothing for the day, one light jacket or sweater for evenings, comfortable shoes for sightseeing, and sunscreen — the mountain sun is stronger than it feels.
Packing for Autumn (September to November)
Autumn temperatures drop steadily through the season. Carry medium-weight woollens, a windproof jacket, and closed shoes — many travellers underestimate how cold late-November mornings can get.
Packing for Winter (December to February)
Winter demands serious cold-weather gear: heavy thermal wear, a down or padded winter jacket, waterproof snow boots, gloves, a woollen cap and thick socks. If you're planning skiing or snow activities at Gulmarg, thermal base layers make a big difference — snow gear itself can usually be rented locally.
