The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest cable car rides in the world, carrying visitors from the meadows of Gulmarg up to Apharwat Peak at over 13,000 feet. It's the single most-booked experience for anyone visiting Kashmir, and with a little planning, it's easy to make the most of it.

Gondola Phase 1: Gulmarg to Kongdoori

Phase 1 rises from Gulmarg (about 2,650m) to Kongdoori (about 3,050m) in roughly 10–15 minutes. This stretch offers sweeping views of the Gulmarg golf course, pine forests and the surrounding Pir Panjal range, and is included in most standard Gulmarg sightseeing tours.

Gondola Phase 2: Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak

Phase 2 climbs from Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak (around 3,980m), where snow is visible almost year-round. This section is weather-dependent and occasionally closes for maintenance or high winds, so it's worth checking availability on the day. Phase 2 tickets are booked separately from Phase 1 and typically sell out first during peak season.

Ticket Prices and How to Book

Gondola tickets are sold in two stages — Phase 1 and Phase 2 — and prices vary by season and traveller category. Tickets can be booked online in advance through the official Gulmarg Gondola website or purchased at the counter, though on-the-spot queues can run into hours during peak winter and summer weekends.

Best Time to Ride the Gondola

December to February offers the most reliable snow at both stages, ideal for skiing and snow play at Apharwat. Between March and June, Phase 1 stays green while Phase 2 still holds snow — a good combination for travellers who want both meadows and snow in the same trip.

Tips for a Smooth Gondola Experience

  • Book tickets early, especially in December–February and the May–July peak season
  • Carry warm layers even in summer — temperatures at Apharwat Peak drop sharply
  • Arrive early morning to avoid the longest queues
  • Rent snow gear (boots, gloves) locally at Gulmarg rather than carrying your own
  • Keep a buffer day in your itinerary in case Phase 2 closes for weather

If you'd rather have the tickets, transfers and timing handled for you, our Kashmir Winter Getaway and Best of Kashmir Tour Package both include a dedicated Gulmarg Gondola experience.

Yes, though Phase 2 can close temporarily during high winds or heavy snowfall — it's worth having a flexible day in your itinerary.

Warm, layered clothing, gloves and sturdy shoes are recommended year-round, since temperatures at Apharwat Peak are significantly colder than at the base.

Including queues, both stages typically take 3–4 hours round trip, longer during peak season.
