Pahalgam Sightseeing – ABC Valleys

Pahalgam’s ABC Valleys—Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari—form the most popular local sightseeing circuit around Pahalgam. Each valley offers a different experience, from riverside landscapes and forest walks to open meadows and dramatic mountain views. Travellers can cover all three in a single sightseeing day, although spending a night in Pahalgam allows a more relaxed start and enough time for photography and short walks.

Aru Valley lies beyond Pahalgam amid pine forests, meadows and mountain scenery. It is known for its peaceful atmosphere and is also a starting point for several treks and outdoor experiences. Visitors can enjoy riverside views, local cafés and short walks without needing to undertake a difficult trek.

Betaab Valley is surrounded by wooded slopes and mountains, with the Lidder River flowing through the landscape. The valley became widely known after the Bollywood film Betaab and remains one of Pahalgam’s most photographed attractions. Entry tickets, operating hours and local access rules can change, so travellers should check the latest information during their visit.

Chandanwari is the third stop in the ABC circuit and is associated with the traditional Amarnath Yatra route. The road follows the river through increasingly rugged mountain terrain. Snow may remain in or around higher sections during parts of the season, but snow availability should never be treated as guaranteed.

Local sightseeing towards Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari is generally operated by vehicles hired from the authorised Pahalgam taxi stand. A private cab arriving from Srinagar can bring travellers to Pahalgam, but it may not be permitted to operate on these local routes. Always check the displayed rate card, confirm the selected circuit and agree on the complete vehicle price before departure.

Most travellers keep approximately four to six hours for the ABC Valleys circuit. The actual duration depends on traffic, weather, the number of stops and time spent at each valley. Baisaran Valley, popularly called Mini Switzerland, is a separate optional excursion generally reached by pony or on foot and is not part of the regular ABC taxi circuit.

April to November is usually the most practical period for Pahalgam sightseeing, subject to weather and road conditions. Winter access can vary after snowfall. Carry a light jacket even during summer, wear comfortable walking shoes and keep extra time in the itinerary rather than rushing through all three valleys.
