Daksum Valley Experience

Daksum is a quiet forest retreat in South Kashmir, set beside the Bringi River and surrounded by conifer-covered slopes. Located about 40 kilometres southeast of Anantnag, it offers a slower alternative to the region’s crowded resort towns. Travellers usually come for riverside scenery, cool mountain air, short nature walks and the peaceful drive through the Kokernag area.

The valley works well as a relaxed day excursion from Anantnag or as an overnight stop when accommodation is available. It can be combined with Kokernag’s spring and botanical garden, while the road towards Sinthan Top continues into higher mountain terrain. Daksum and Sinthan Top should not be treated as the same stop: weather and official access may allow one section while restricting another.

Forests, grazing areas and clear streams shape the experience. There are no large commercial attractions, so the best plan is to leave time for photography, a picnic in an appropriate area and gentle walking near safe, accessible sections. Avoid entering fast-flowing water, disturbing livestock or leaving litter in the forest. Trout fishing is associated with the area, but visitors should only fish where it is legally permitted and with the required local authorisation.

May to October is usually the most comfortable seasonal window, subject to road, weather and official access conditions. A current Anantnag district notice dated 7 July 2026 lists Daksum among tourist destinations closed through 31 December 2026. Travellers should not proceed until the administration confirms reopening; iC Kashmir will plan the visit only after checking the latest official status.

When access is open, carry a light rain jacket, warm layer, walking shoes, water and basic medicines. Facilities, card payments and mobile connectivity can be limited beyond the main Kokernag area. Confirm meal stops, fuel and accommodation before departure, especially if travelling with children or older family members.

A comfortable South Kashmir plan can include Verinag, Kokernag and Daksum over one or two days, but only when all selected sites are officially open. Trying to add Sinthan Top, Pahalgam and a return to Srinagar on the same day creates unnecessary road time. A flexible overnight in Kokernag or Daksum is more suitable for travellers seeking an offbeat experience.

iC Kashmir local tip: check the access order on the morning of travel, not only when the package is booked. If Daksum remains closed, do not attempt unofficial entry or pressure a driver to continue.
