From the Saffron Fields of Pampore

I was born and raised in Barsoo, a small village near Pampore in the Pulwama district of Kashmir.

Pampore is widely known as the Saffron Town of India. The area is famous for producing some of the finest Kashmiri saffron in the world.

Every autumn, the fields around Pampore come alive with delicate purple saffron flowers. Visitors see beauty in those fields. For families like mine, however, those fields represent generations of hard work, patience, tradition, and connection to the land.

I come from a farming family. My grandfather worked personally in our fields and orchards. Farming was not simply an occupation for us; it was part of our identity.

Our family cultivated saffron and maintained orchards with apples, almonds, walnuts, and other seasonal produce. As children, we grew up surrounded by the natural rhythms of Kashmir. Spring brought blossoms to the orchards, summer filled the fields and trees with life, autumn turned the landscape golden and brought the saffron bloom, and winter covered the mountains and villages in snow.

Long before I understood tourism, business, or travel planning, Kashmir had already become a part of my personality. Its land taught me patience. Its people taught me hospitality. Its seasons taught me that every journey has its own time. Its mountains taught me humility.

These lessons continue to influence how we serve every guest at iC Kashmir today.

My Early Education in Kashmir

My schooling began in my village. I completed my early education in Barsoo and studied there until the middle-school level. Growing up in a small village meant that life was simple, disciplined, and closely connected to the community.

After my early schooling, I moved to Awantipora for high school. Later, I continued my higher secondary education in Pampore and eventually went to Srinagar for graduation and further studies.

Almost my entire education took place in Kashmir. At the time, I did not realise how valuable this would later become.

By living and studying in different parts of the valley, I came to understand Kashmir not only as a tourist destination but as a living region with distinct communities, traditions, landscapes, food, history, and local realities. I knew village Kashmir, town life, Srinagar, the saffron belt, and the roads, seasons, distances, and local way of life.

Many years later, this background would become one of the greatest strengths of iC Kashmir.

Joining the Indian Air Force

In 2003, I joined the Indian Air Force as part of the Indian Air Force Police. For a young man from a small village in Kashmir, wearing the Air Force uniform was one of the proudest moments of my life.

The Indian Air Force gave me much more than a career. It gave me discipline, confidence, responsibility, courage, exposure, and a deep understanding of commitment.

For more than twenty years, I served the nation in different parts of India. My service took me far from home and introduced me to places, people, cultures, and situations that I could never have experienced otherwise. Some postings were comfortable, some were demanding, and some were in remote and strategically important regions where civilian access was limited.

One of the most memorable chapters of my career was my posting in the Nicobar Islands, where I served for nearly two years. The Nicobar region is one of the most remote parts of India, and living and working there required adaptability, resilience, teamwork, and complete dedication.

My service also covered important periods in India's defence history. Those experiences strengthened my belief that responsibility cannot be treated casually. When people depend on you, you must deliver. When you make a commitment, you must honour it. When a situation becomes difficult, you do not disappear — you remain available, calm, and accountable.

These values later became the foundation of iC Kashmir.

What the Indian Air Force Taught Me

A travel company and the Indian Air Force may appear to be completely different worlds. But the values required to succeed in both are surprisingly similar.

Discipline: A journey must be planned carefully. Hotels, transport, timing, routes, sightseeing, local restrictions, weather, and guest requirements must all be coordinated properly.

A Passion for Adventure: Skiing and Para Jumps

Beyond discipline and duty, my years in the Air Force also gave me a genuine love for adventure, something that continues to shape how iC Kashmir designs adventure experiences for our guests today.

I was detailed for Skiing training in Gulmarg in 2009 and 2010 through JIM and WS. Training on the same slopes that thousands of tourists now visit every winter gave me a first-hand understanding of Gulmarg's terrain, weather, and skiing culture.

I am also a certified Para Jumper. I completed this training while posted at the Andaman and Nicobar base, successfully completing six jumps from an Mi-8 helicopter.

These experiences taught me that adventure requires the same discipline as any other mission: careful preparation, respect for nature, and calm decision-making under pressure. That same mindset now shapes how we plan skiing trips, mountain excursions, and offbeat adventures for our guests at iC Kashmir.

No Matter Where I Served, I Missed Kashmir

During my Air Force career, I travelled and lived in many parts of India. I saw different landscapes, cultures, cities, islands, and regions. But no matter where I was posted, I always missed Kashmir.

I missed the mountains, the smell of the soil after rain, the orchards, the saffron fields, the seasons, the food, the language, and my family. Most of all, I missed the feeling of home.

Every time I returned to Kashmir on leave, I felt a sense of peace that I could not find anywhere else. The closer I came to retirement, the stronger that feeling became.

I began asking myself an important question: after leaving the Air Force, should I take another job that keeps me away from my family and Kashmir?

Preparing for a Second Career

Before completing my Air Force service, I prepared seriously for a second career.

My professional background was in security and protection. I therefore considered joining the corporate security sector after retirement.

As part of that preparation, I earned the Certified Protection Professional credential, commonly known as CPP, from ASIS International.

The certification represented an important professional achievement and opened the possibility of continuing in the security industry.

I had the experience. I had the qualification. I had more than twenty years of disciplined service behind me. A conventional next step would have been to take a security leadership role in another part of India.

But something inside me remained unsettled. I kept thinking: what is the purpose of leaving the Air Force if I again have to stay far away from my family and my homeland?

I was grateful for my service career, but I did not want the next chapter of my life to be based only on a salary or designation.

I wanted to build something meaningful. I wanted to return home. I wanted to stay connected with my people. I wanted to create something that could also support the local economy. I wanted work that would make me happy.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

As my retirement approached, I discussed my thoughts with my wife. I explained that I could take a private-sector job, but it might once again keep me away from Kashmir and my family.

We spoke about what kind of work would give us purpose, and we spoke about tourism. Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Kashmir. It creates opportunities for hotel staff, drivers, guides, pony owners, artisans, photographers, restaurant workers, houseboat owners, transporters, and many other local families.

We realised that a travel company could allow us to build a livelihood while also contributing to the region. More importantly, it would give me the opportunity to welcome visitors to the place I had missed for so many years.

The idea felt personal. It felt natural. It felt right. Only a short time before my retirement, we decided to start our own travel company.

Returning Home in 2023

I completed my Indian Air Force service in June 2023, after more than twenty years in uniform. I then returned to Kashmir.

This was not simply a change of career. It was a homecoming. For years, I had imagined returning permanently to the place where I was born. Now, I had the opportunity to build my future there.

Starting a travel business was not easy. I had no large corporate office. I did not come from a traditional tourism-business family. I did not have a major advertising budget.

What I had was local knowledge, discipline, commitment, personal experience, and a clear vision of how a guest should be treated. That became our starting point.

Why the Name “iC Kashmir”?

People often ask about the meaning of our name. The name iC Kashmir is inspired by the phrase: “I See Kashmir.”

During my years away from home, I always wanted to see Kashmir again. I wanted to see the mountains, villages, orchards, snow, rivers, saffron fields, and people I had missed.

Later, the phrase took on a bigger meaning. It became an invitation to travellers: come and see Kashmir through the eyes of a local. Not only the famous attractions, and not only the places that appear in advertisements, but the real Kashmir.

The Kashmir of local families. The Kashmir of changing seasons. The Kashmir of hidden valleys. The Kashmir of warm hospitality. The Kashmir of history, spirituality, food, art, and culture. That is what iC Kashmir represents.

From the beginning, I had one clear vision: every guest travelling through iC Kashmir should return home satisfied. This is not a marketing statement. It is a personal commitment.
